The ground floor was reserved for powder on the seaward side, where the wall was strongest, with the ammunition on the opposite wall. Some towers had a cavity hollowed into the thickest part of the wall, likely for storing the most dangerous materials.

Tower 13 at Hythe was divided into two floors. The high-level entrance door opened into the first floor which usually housed the living quarters. A trap door and ladder gave access to the ground floor, and there is a trap door which we are currently investigating .
